26th Annual Jersey Classic Horse Show - The  2012 USEF licensed competition is scheduled for June 8-10 at the Horse Park of NJ.  Showing at Devon?  Inquire about layover arrangements at the Horse Park of New Jersey.  The Jersey Classic is a really great "big" little show and your opportunity to gain points!  Plan now to attend.

Safety Check List - Do you have your emergency disaster plans in place?  Serviced your fire extinquishers?  Posted "No Smoking" signs?  Inspected your elecrical wiring?  Cleaned out the cob webs?   Posted barn safety rules and emergency phone numbers?  Do your caretakers/employees know how to contact fire, police and rescue squads?

02/04/12 - "Responsible Horse Ownership in a Tough Economic Climate" is the theme of the upcoming Horse Management Seminar hosted by the Rutgers Equine Science Center and Rutgers Cooperative Extension.  The seminar, scheduled from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm will feature presentations by several equine industry experts.  "Our goal in presenting this workshop is to provide tools and tips to keep our horses happy and healthy, and our equine businesses successful and profitable, without breaking the bank" says Dr. Carey.  Complete program information and seminar brochure are posted on the Equine Science Center website at esc.rutgers.edu.  For more information, contact Laura Gladney at 848-932-3229 or Dr. Carey Williams at 848-932-5529.

03/12/12  - Animal Emergency Clinic, "Weathering the Storm" will be the topic at the 14th Annual New Jersey Animal Emergency Working Group Symposium on Monday, March 12th at the Burlington County Emergency Services Training Center in Westampton, NJ.  The discussion will include After Action Reports from County Animal Response Teams (CART) activated durind Hurricane Irene and the October snow storm - lessons learned from these experiences.  The cost is $20 per person.  For more information contact Shari C. 01/07/12 - Congratulations to Nealia McCracken!  Nealia McCracken of North Wind Stables, Hardwick, NJ accepted the Shirley Parkinson Professional Achievement Award at the 2012 United Professional Horseman's Association (UPHA) National Convention in Nashville, Tenn.  Nealia was honored "for her unselfish work, outside her expertise in horsemanship, for the betterment of our organization and our industry".

08/2011 - The New Jersey Horse Council August Newsletter is available on their website.  It is worthwhile to scan through the pages for items of interest.  Included in this issue are excerpts from the General Accounting Office (GAO) report on the decline in horse welfare.  Some pretty interesting items are noted that call for action by concerned horse owners regarding shipping horses to Canada for slaughter.  Visit their site at www.njhorsecouncil.com

08/05/11 - Saddlebreds on Display - On Friday, August 5th, three riders from Smoke Hollow Farm, Pittstown, NJ joined the Tristate Riding Team to showcase the American Saddlebred at the Warren County Farmer Fair in Harmony, NJ.  The Tri-State Equine Riding Team returned for the eighth year with live music from New Jersey musician Plainfield Slim & The Groundhawgs.  Riders performed their routines on Friday night in the Horse Ring.  Breeds  represented included Andalusions, Lusitanos, Peruvian Pasos and Icelandics.  Smoke Hollow riders exhibited American Saddlebreds with Brian Campbell showing Western and Dr. Jen Moore and Sarah Rowland showing as they would in the English Pleasure Division.               

07/23/11 - West Nile found in area mosquitoes.  This article appeared in The Express Times by Phillip Molnar.  It is printed in part as follows:  Three groups of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in Warren County (NJ), which the county mosquito commission said is "cause for alarm".  This is the earliest in the season the commission has ever found the virus in a mosquito population since it started tracking the virus in 1999.  The first positive showing for the virus came June 30 from Blairstown Township's Footbridge Park.  Horse owners should make sure their animals are up to date on vaccinations for the virus, they said.  No mosquitoes with the virus have been spotted in nearby Hunterdon County.  

06/09/11 - ASHA of NJ recieves letter of thanks from Rutgers University Foundation for our gift of $250 designated for the Equine Science Center.  Throughout 2011, the Center will be celebrating its tenth anniversary.  "In the next ten years we plan to continue to provide global leadership in the discovery of better ways to manage horses and horse farms, and develop future leaders to ensure the sustainability of the horse industry."  This according to Karyn Malinowski, Ph.D., Director of the Center.

05/06/11 -The American Saddlebred Horse Association announces the formation of the new Western Dressage Association.  According to Brenda Newell, ASHA Sr. Program Administrator, memberships are pouring in.  "There is tremendous interest in this new discipline from all over the world" according to Barbara.  A complete affiliate package has been put together for those wanting to start their own club with Colorado leading the way.  A link has been added to the new website on our Mane page for those interested in more information.  Promoting Western Dressage is one of the Charter Club Council's priorities this year.

05/06/11 - More from the ASHA Charter Club Council (CCC):  ASHA's first breed/discipline alliance is being formed with the American Driving Society.  Susan Vine has organized this alliance under the auspices of the Sport Horse Committee.  The CCC is also promoting more AOT participation in Charter Clubs, is working on starting a versatility charter club, and focusing on ways to increase membership.  Stay tuned for more reports from the CCC.
